December 17 Cross Nationals 2006The season is at a end! I watched some great racing and had a good day myself. I finished up in 16th place. For the first two laps I was in the top 10 but the fast pace was too much and I slipped back some. I'm super happy with the result since there was over 200 guys in the race. 160 finished out of the 200, and five with a lap down getting lapped on the last lap. I was only :47 seconds off the lead time.
The course was 180 degrees opposite of last year. It was just tackie enough to give great traction and dry enough that it was fast fast fast. It was the same course of 2005 expect for they added about 12 turns.
I was excited to have my whole family there and three good friends as well to cheer me on. It was a great season that ended well. Thanks to all that made it what it was.
December 10 SCC #9 Kelly Creek Series FinalClassic cross weather and course! Those two added up to a tough day at the office. The course was muddy and robbed power from every pedal stroke. I hadn't been sleeping very well so I wasn't sure how I was going to go out there so I was a bit worried. I was excited about the conditions since I like the mud.
I started on the front next to Eric Emsky and my teammate John. I took the ealier lead until Benny went by me at the top of the first climb. I slowly slipped back to around 10th just like I had last year. I settled into my own pace and slowly started to move back through the pack. I would make my way back to 7th. I was also finish 7 points out of third for the year. Last year I also finished 4th for the year but I believe this year I was faster but so was the competition.
Thanks to everyone from the fans, officials teammates, and other racers for making this year such a good time. I'll see some of you next weekend at the Nationals. Wish me luck, I'm one of 218 riders in the Men's 35 + race! December 06 SCC #7 and #8 Fort FlaglerThis past weekend was a double header out at Fort Flagler State Park. Saturdays' course was like the two course we raced last year. They made small changes which I really enjoyed. Sunday we got to race on a whole new course which took us around, on top and through WWII gun placements. It made for some great racing.
The weekend started with a late start on Friday night. James picked me up some time after seven pm and we packed his borrowed BMW 325i to the hilt. We got to the Edmonds ferry dock at 8:39 for the 8:40 boat. We were one of the last cars on. While James was attempting to lock the doors the key broke off in the passenger door. Lucky for us James had a small set of needle nose pliers in his tool box which we were able to use to remove the broken section. The big problem was that the key we broke was the ignition key as well. We made a call and Aaron, who owns the car said to just put the broken section of key in the ignition. The reality was we had no other choice since we were sitting on the middle of the ferry. It all worked out but gave us a good scare.
The next scare was the black ice that we hit multiple times once on the island. We got to the barracks about 9 something. We didn't get to sleep until past 11 since everyone was very chatty.
Saturday started at 8:30. It was nice to not have to get up and drive to the race, we were already there. It was cold and I didn't feel well for most of the morning. By race time I had forgot about my upset stomach. The race started fast and I did my best to keep up with the pace but in my head I was keeping up. I did slip back to about 10th place but about half way through the race I slowly picked one rider off at a time. I was about to finish 7th. I should have been happy but at the time I was disappointed since I wasn't up front. Later I realized that I never gave up and I raced my own race, finishing a respectful 7th. I felt better after I had time to reflect. I still wish I was up front with the leader since earlier in the season I was.
Saturday night there was a pasta dinner in the mess hall. The dinner was just what we all needed. It was too noisy for me in the mesh hall so I didn't hang out long. I lost a game of cribbage to my teammate and then read.
Sunday was a little warmer but I had a headache since I finished my race on Saturday. My legs felt better than they did on Saturday so I was looking forward to racing. I took the start once again and held it about half way through the first lap. While practicing my start I think my rear derailleur cable slipped because for the first three laps my gears jumped all over. I switched bikes for a lap and got my A bike back, good as new. I basically spent almost the whole race by myself sitting in 5th place. With one lap to go I was caught by the 6th place rider and he went by. I finished alone in 6th.
As I expected I dropped out of third place overall to fourth. I'm hoping I can do well next Sunday and get back into the top three. The weekend was great and both courses were awesome. I really enjoyed myself and the pain was good. November 26 Lake Serene HikeToday I decided it was a perfect day to go for a hike. I knew it would be snowing in the mountains so I wouldn't get too wet. I was sured to get soaked if I went for a bike ride.
I picked Lake Serene which is located along Rt. 2 below Mt. Index. It was snowing in the parking lot at 600 feet and continued the whole way up. The wind at the lake made it impossible to see and to stick around long. The snow drifts were up to my crotch at the lake! I heard a large avalanche while at the lake. It sounded like a bomb went off then rolling thunder. With the heavy snow and low visibility I couldn't see it.
On the hike back down I took the side trail up to Bridal Viel Falls. It's a half mile trip to the view point but well worth it. The falls reminded me of Virgin Falls in Glacier park. By this time the snow had almost stopped and it appeared to be clearing up. That would not be the case since I encounter rain and snow on the way back to Kenmore.
All in all it was a great 9 mile hike. I would like to go back in the summer, so I can actually get a look at the lake and the surrounding cliffs. November 18 USGP #5 SteilacoomToday was round 5 of the USGP cyclocross series. It's the premier cross series in the country. I made my mind up earlier in the week to approach this race as a training race. It wasn't part of the local series so I had nothing to lose. I almost got through the drive to the race without any butterflies but I'd be lying if I said I did. Even so the day was laid back and I just enjoyed myself.
Since I'm in the top 8 for points in the local series I got called up and got the first pick on the line. At the gun I took the holeshot and proceeded to lead the group all the way to the run up. I fully expected someone to come by me on the road leading up to the climb but no one did until we were on the climb. I finished up the first lap in 4th and as the race went on I slipped back some more. On the last lap I started to bring the group in front me back some but it wasn't enough.
I went into the last turn with a guy on my wheel. He had been sucking it for half the lap. I went through all the gears and the both of us sprinted it out, actually causing us to catch the 8th place guy. The tree of us finished within two feet of each. I lost the sprint as the guy behind me slipped out of the slip-stream and got me by about 6 inches. I would end up 10th on the day and pretty happy with that.
Up next is the double header at Ft. Flagger. |
